Did you Know?

The oldest known recipe for sweet ice tea was published in 1879 in a community cookbook called Housekeeping in Old Virginia, by Marion Cabell Tyree. The recipe calls for green tea. In fact most sweet tea drunk during this period was green tea. During WWII, the major sources of green tea were cut off from the U.S. and the South, leaving them with tea almost exclusively from British - controlled India which produces black tea. Southerners came out of the war drinking nearly 99 percent black tea.

Fried chicken is famous for its roots in the South. The Scots, and later Scottish immigrants to the southern states had a tradition of deep frying chicken in fat unlike their English counterparts who baked or boiled chicken.

 

Did You Know?

Krispy Creme doughnuts, a classic Southern treat, had such popular demand in 1936 when the establishment originated in Winston - Salem, NC, that they had to cut a hole in the wall of the store to sell them. This innovation was the beginning of the modern day window service.

If you have noticed clothing with a "micro fiber" ( a.k.a. polyester ) filling up the department store racks, here's why : There's a southern cotton shortage! When southern farmers grow "to much" cotton the feds pay the growers to keep it off the market. This is in part to the "Freedom to Farm" act that Clinton started while he was in office. Basically it pits southern farmers against mid west farmers and rice paddies against cornfields.
